Before treatment I was unable to stand up for long periods of time due to strong achey pains in my rectal area. This affected my life immensely and being unable to identify the cause myself or through a doctor was worrying and frustrating, making the situation significantly worse.
I was also experiencing pain during sex, mostly upon entrance which made me fear sex and feel as if I would never be able to have normal relationship. Recognising that the two things were linked to pelvic floor issues, I was prescribed dilators after a painful examination but due to no guidance or help along the way didn’t have any success with them.
My main reservation about treatment was the pain I had experienced with examinations in the past. I was also worried that if I accepted I had a pelvic floor problem then it would become more of a big deal in my head as in the past I had tried to ignore symptoms and hope they would go away on their own. However being only 21 at the time I wanted to resolve this issue as early as possible before it began to affect my adult life.
Treatment was the best decision I could have made and I’m so grateful to have found out about pelvic floor physiotherapy. I felt completely comfortable during sessions with Helen and this enabled me to relax and not be nervous. Helen gave me stretches and squeezing exercises to do in my own time to help the strength and flexibility of my pelvic floor and I left each session feeling a sense of achievement that I was working towards a 100% recovery. I was also given guidance of how to use dilators which has built my confidence immensely as well as lots of advice and reassurance to help me along the way.
The best result from treatment has been being able to have sex successfully and be in a happy relationship.
