I booked in to see Helen for a pregnancy MOT because I was concerned about changes to my tummy muscles (a widening gap and some coning) in my second trimester, and unsure of the strength of my pelvic floor and core. I wasn’t clear on what exercises I should or could be doing at all, so was keen to get some clarity.
The pregnancy MOT was exactly what I needed. Helen talked through everything with me in clear and simple terms. She was really thorough and able to answer any questions I had big or small. She explained really well how everything links together, and how and why I might be seeing certain changes to my body, which was incredibly helpful (and really interesting!)
Helen tested my pelvic floor while I was there which was well worth doing. I left the appointment with peace of mind and feeling much more in control and confident about my pregnancy and the changes to my body.
If you have any issues, complications or even just some unanswered questions and concerns about your pregnancy, I couldn’t recommend Helen enough. She was fab.
Just wanted to let you know I’ve done a short Santa run with my little girl and a Christmas Eve jog with my family and all was ok!!! Thank you so much for your help getting my body back in balance – I can’t tell you how good that feels so just wanted to say a really big thank you!
Helen has been absolutely vital in my post-natal recoveries after 2 difficult pregnancies and deliveries. I benefited greatly from her expertise and care in diagnosing and treating pelvic pain, pelvic instability, and back pain. She has been a godsend in the road back to full recovery and return to exercise. A post-natal MOT with Helen is a must for any expecting mum: more vital than any item on baby’s nursery list!
I visited Helen recently for a Pregnancy MOT. I am 6 weeks pregnant & have been doing Crossfit for over 2 years. I didn’t know if I can continue doing this and wanted to know more about pelvic floor health. I have a friend who had a baby last year and when she heard I’m pregnant the first thing she said was “Make sure you do your pelvic floor exercises ASAP, I wish I would do them during pregnancy”. That made me think it must be important, because I know how much problems my friend had after she gave birth. I decided to see Helen for her Pregnancy MOT, to make sure I know everything I should about pelvic floor and that I am doing my pelvic floor exercises correctly.
I booked an appointment easily through Helen’s website. She meet me with a smile and invited me to the therapy room. We had a long conversation about my medical history, actual concerns and expectations. Then Helen explained to me what the pelvic floor muscles do, why it’s so important to exercise them and how to do it. She asked me if I want her to examine me regarding pelvic alignment/movements and then pelvic floor muscles so she can correct me if I’m doing something wrong. That was exactly what I needed because I wasn’t sure if my technique is correct. The whole appointment was very professional and nice experience. My dignity was protected the whole time and I didn’t feel uncomfortable at any point.
I feel I confidently know what I should do now. I know the importance of doing pelvic floor exercises and importantly I now know HOW to do them correctly. I was reassured that my physical activity levels are safe when pregnant and I even got some recommendations for gym clothes for expecting mothers.
I think it’s important for everyone to have this bag of information from Helen, so you can be safe, healthy and enjoy your baby. And to be able to say “I did everything I could to protect my health”.
When I began my treatment with Helen I was coming up to 4 years post baby 2. Under treatment from a previous physio, I had addressed some occasional stress incontinence and made good improvements to my diastasis recti. However, I still had an area around my bellybutton which was soft, squishy and unable to generate tension. When I crunched up, this would bulge. Going into double table top position, with both legs lifted off the floor, knees bent, was impossible. This made me very self-conscious in my work as a personal trainer because, while coaching clients through various progressions of core exercise, I was aware that I myself was unable to do precisely what I was trying to get them to.
My main concern before starting treatment was that Helen wouldn’t be able to help me improve my diastasis and that I would forever have to modify certain exercises and avoid certain positions. Within a few minutes of examining my abdomen, though, and observing the coordination of my core, Helen confidently declared that we would definitely be able to get it better. And her confidence was infectious!
Treatment with Helen has been so enjoyable, because she fills you with confidence that you can overcome your dysfunction and get to where you want to be. When you’re feeling a bit deflated that your body isn’t doing what you need and want it to do, this is enormously empowering. At the time of writing I have had three sessions with Helen and, already, my diastasis is SO much more functional. With just 15 repetitions of one exercise to do morning and night – easy peasy to it around my work and family life – I am for the first time, since pre-babies, able to get good tension in the bellybutton area; no more squidginess! Helen modestly says, “It’s easy when you know how” but this massively plays down the breadth of her clinical experience and ability to communicate in a way that makes it easy for you to ‘get it’, like a massive penny dropping.
The one best result I’ve gained from treatment is the feeling of strength that comes from having a core unit which is coordinating effectively. For me, this was not about aesthetics, but about getting functional. My husband keeps catching me touching my bellybutton because it really does feel too good to be true! Thank you, Helen.
